Sebastián Montes | Vita
Sebastián Montes was born in Santiago de Chile in 1979. He began studying classical guitar with his father at the age of thirteen and entered the Department of Arts at the University of Chile in 1995, where he studied Classical Guitar with Professor Luis Orlandini. He completed his licentiate degree in music in 2003 with maximum distinction and received the D.A.A.D. German academic exchange service scholarship that same year, which allowed him to pursue post graduate studies in Germany at the Hannover Superior School of Music and Theater under the tutelage of Professor Frank Bungarten.
He has performed in major concert halls throughout his native Chile as well as in Argentina, Peru, Cuba, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Spain, the United States, Sweden, Austria, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Germany.
Montes has performed extensively as a soloist, in a duo with Luis Orlandini, and as a member of the Cuarteto de Guitarras de Chile with the Symphonic Orchestras of Chile, Concepción, and Antofagasta. He has also performed with Chile's National Youth Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Chile, the University of Santiago Orchestra, and the Symphonic Orchestras of Mendoza, Argentina; Lima, Peru; Ingolstadt and Kaiserslautern, Germany; the Beiras Philharmonic Orchestra in Portugal; and the Liceo Grand Theater Orchestra in Barcelona, Spain.
A founding member of the Cuarteto de Guitarras de Chile , Montes has traveled widely with the group since 1999, performing in many countries in Central and South America as well as in Europe. They played a feature performance in the International Guitar Festival in Havana, Cuba, organized by Leo Brouwer, and in 2004 they embarked upon their first German tour, during which they performed with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
In early 2005 Montes joined German guitarist Katrin Klingeberg in a duo, and the two have played together in Germany, Chile, Portugal, and Spain. In December 2005 they performed Joaquín Rodrigo's Madrigal Concert for two guitars and orchestra with the Reutlingen Junge Sinfonie .
Montes has recorded two CDs with the Cuarteto de Guitarras de Chile on the SVR label, and in November 2006 he recorded his first solo CD entitled Variaciones para Guitarra (Variations for Guitar) with works by Dowland, Weiss, Sor, Rodrigo, and Britten.
